David A. "Tony" Hoffman, Ph.D., is a faculty lecturer at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a licensed psychologist in private practice in Santa Cruz, California.

At UCSC, Dr. Hoffman teaches a variety of undergraduate courses in developmental, sociocultural, and clinical psychology, including child development, adolescent development, psychological assessment, abnormal psychology (human psychopathology), and developmental psychopathology. He also supervises UCSC psychology students in community-based service learning.

Dr. Hoffman's clinical practice is devoted exclusively to child, adolescent and family psychology. He specializes in pediatric, school and developmental psychology. A significant portion of his practice serves low-income families.

In the last five years, Dr. Hoffman has devoted much of his time and research to the study of children in extremely difficult circumstances, particularly war-affected children. He teaches a course on Children and War at UCSC, and he is developing a course on Children in Extreme Circumstances. Both of these are the only undergraduate course on these topics in the nation.

Dr. Hoffman also runs a summer field service program in Costa Rica, training UCSC students to work with street children, children living in orphanages and foster homes, children in low-income day cares, and children attending barrio schools. In 2007, the program won the "Best Credit Program" award from the Western Association of Summer Session Administrators, and in 2008 he won the Social Psychology Network Action Teaching Award for "The Forced Migration Project: A Refugee Shelter Display."

Dr. Hoffman was trained in developmental and clinical psychology in doctoral and postdoctoral programs accredited by the American Psychological Association. Dr. Hoffman is a member of the American Psychological Association, the California Psychological Association, the Monterey Bay Psychological Association, and Psychologists for Social Responsibility.
